Feature

Ask out loud. Hear the answer back.

Hold the mic button and say what you want to know. Press Listen and the answer is read to you. Both the listening and the speaking happen on your Mac, so the recording and the text stay where they started.

See it work

A lease, explained and then read aloud.

The same panel that answers in writing will speak the answer, at a speed you set.

Recorded in local mode on a MacBook Pro, not sped up; the pause while the voice loads is cut. The read-aloud audio was rendered separately with the app’s own voice and speed, since screen recording doesn’t capture app sound. The lease is fictional.

Legal writing like this lease is hard going, especially if you have dyslexia.

Highlight the section, and press Option-Shift-E.

Hey Eduardo explains it in plain words, and spells out the hard ones.

Want just the key points? Click Simpler.

Then click Listen. It reads the explanation aloud, and highlights each word as it goes.

[Hey Eduardo reads the explanation aloud]

So why not paste it into ChatGPT or Claude? This lease has your name, your address, and your rent, and they would go to another company's servers.

Here, the explanation and the voice both run on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Hey Eduardo. heyeduardo.app

Both directions

Talking to it, and it talking back.

Hold the mic and talk

Highlight something, open the panel and hold the microphone button. Your words become the question. Useful when the question is long, or when typing it out is the part that stops you asking.

🔊

Press Listen

The answer is spoken aloud while your eyes stay on the document. Handy for proofreading by ear, for long explanations, and for anyone who takes in more by listening than by reading.

Simpler, if you need it

One button rewrites the answer in plainer words. Pair it with Listen and a dense paragraph becomes something you can follow at your own pace.

Why it matters

Dictation usually means sending your voice somewhere.

Most dictation and read-aloud features stream audio or text to a company's servers to do the work. That is fine for a shopping list. It is a different question when the sentence you are dictating contains a client's name, or the paragraph being read aloud is their medical history.

Here the speech model and the voice both live on your Mac. The recording goes to a temporary file, is transcribed on your own machine, and is deleted as soon as the text comes back. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is kept.

It is also why this keeps working on a plane, in a locked-down office, or anywhere the network is not an option.

Worth knowing

Dictation understands English. The speech model that ships today is an English one, so other languages will not transcribe well.

The voices are synthesized on your Mac, so they are plainer than the best cloud voices. The trade is that the text being read never leaves the machine.

Dictation needs microphone permission and a one-time model download from Settings → Speech. Reading answers aloud needs neither.

Who uses it most

Reading is not everyone's fastest way in.

Adults with dyslexia

Hearing a paragraph after reading it is a well-worn strategy. Here the text never leaves your Mac, so it works on documents you are not allowed to paste anywhere.

Anyone at the end of a long day

Reading fatigue is real. Listening to the summary of a twelve-page contract takes less out of you than reading it twice.

People who think out loud

Some questions come out better spoken than typed. Hold the mic, ramble, and let it sort out what you meant.

Common Questions

What people ask about voice.

Does my voice recording go to a server?

No. It is written to a temporary file, transcribed on your Mac, and deleted as soon as the text comes back.

Which languages does dictation understand?

English. You can type your question in other languages, but the speech model that ships today is an English one.

Do the voices sound like a cloud assistant?

They are plainer, because they are synthesized on your Mac. In exchange, what is being read never goes anywhere.

Can I change the voice or the speed?

Yes, in Settings → Speech. The speed setting in the demo is the one the app ships with.
